As far as I'm aware valve clearances make no real difference as long as they're not way out of wack.
I think just a good servicing routine is what old hondas love most older jap stuff is the same for example my fto needs a oil change every 4000 miles, rule of thumb for me is spark plugs, oil, air filter twice a year regardless of mileage as long as your not doing high mileages.

I have a 2000 civic MB2 with the D14Z4 engine in it (snapped timing belt) however I have a D16w4 available out of a 1999 civic es MB?, I need to know will I be able to use the loom already in my car and just mate it up to the D16w4 ecu and just add the additional wires in for the vtec?
All help much appreciated
