muggs
ok so im changing the coolant and found out that the capacity for the b18c4 is 3.5litres, so i was going to do 50/50 with coolant. i unscrew the plug at the bottom of the radiator, water comes gushing out once rad cap is off, any as i watched it drain to a drip i was pretty sure that wasnt 3.5litres that came out, obviously not all is going to come out i know but it didnt even look like 2 litres. so i let it drain for half our, engine was warmish by the way and i forgot to put the heater switch on hot. anyway put the plug back in and decided to test fill it with water to see how much goes back in.....ended up just short of 1litre and the water was right at the brim rad neck hole.so what do i have to do to get more water out? do i have to open the big nut on the block under the manifold as thats coolant associated, if i open that i could get extra water out the block, but then theres the worry of getting water back in the block before i start the engine, could be just a case of taking the top rad hose off and feeding collant direct into the block but it may not go straight there, dont know the coolant path on the b18c4. anyway how do i get 1.5 litres of coolant in if im getting just under a litre out.....hmmm maybe drive it let it cool then hopefully will make enough space to top up the rest? civicturbo79
To get the water out of the block the thermostat has to be open so you need to get the car up to temp , then undo the tap on the botom of the rad , (goes with out saying be careful as it will be hot ) . the trick to refilling civics is boil the water, mix it 50/50 with anti freeze This way when you fill the rad the thermostat opens stright away letting all the air out of the block and around the system back to the top of the rad . keep toping up untill you have no bubbles coming to the top of the rad and then fit the cap , make sure the expansion bottle if half full and drive the car for 10 mins leave to cool and check the rap top up if needed and refill expansion bottle if needed .Job done Rich. muggs
but isnt the thermostat connected to the other end of the bottom rad hose? if this is true then the hose travels upwards at a gradient which would be to steep for the boiling water to get to, or would the weight/pressure of a rad full of water push the water upwards to get to the thermostat? civicturbo79
Thats it mate the water and pressure in the rad forces is around . Rich.
