Largest size wheel diameter for vti hub

Has anyone tried a larger diameter than stock wheels on a MB6/MC2? I'm replacing my 17s 2054017et42 due to adverse handling & rear clearance issues, although this is more down to the offset than anything else (most alloy dealers still stating offset as 35-42 !) . From everything I've read, I'll probably fit 16s, but if anyone has tried a higher profile (45+) with 17s (or greater) I'd be interested to hear.

Eventually I'm thinking that with a s80 box & slightly larger tyre I could get the best of both worlds with increased acceleration in lower gears without increasing revs at motorway speeds, whilst still having nice fat hub-filling rims I'm all about function really though, honest.
