Head Gasket Replacement

Morning all,

Had my MC2 in to Honda yesterday to investigate over heating and they've told me the head gasket has gone. So I plan to replace it myself (as they've quoted £1700 for the job).

In the workshop manual under the Head Removal section it shows removal of the cam pulleys and cam shafts prior to lifting the head. Is this really necessary?

I have no concern about any of the other steps, but don't really want to take the cam shafts out, and can't really see why you'd need to as part of the head removal. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Adam.

X2! It's only realisticall 6 hours work (probably less in Honda as they should know the cars inside out!)

Parts should be less than £100, including all washers you need to replace etc, so thats a muchos ammount of labour charge!

Thanks for the replies guys.

£1700 is steap indeed. They have given me a breakdown, all of which (based on parts) is quite expensive. From memory (as it's at home) it's along the lines of:

Head gasket - £866

Timing Belt - £275

Aux belts - £110

Water pump - £357

Even based on Honda parts prices that still leaves a hefty overhead for labour.

Happy to have a crack at it myself. Long time since I've done a head gasket and those were back in my mini/moggie days and A series engines look a lot let complicated...

Shame about the cam gear having to be removed as that presumably makes setting the timing right rather more complicated?

Adam.

Aux belts - £110 --> OMG!

The CAM belt, I'd definatekly change while you have it off anyway, waterpump, guess that's a 'wise' choice, but if you've no issues with it, i wouldbn't bother TBH, aux belts, only if you have to!
