adman
Morning all,Had my MC2 in to Honda yesterday to investigate over heating and they've told me the head gasket has gone. So I plan to replace it myself (as they've quoted £1700 for the job).In the workshop manual under the Head Removal section it shows removal of the cam pulleys and cam shafts prior to lifting the head. Is this really necessary?I have no concern about any of the other steps, but don't really want to take the cam shafts out, and can't really see why you'd need to as part of the head removal. Any ideas? Thanks,Adam.
johngreen537
I think the head bolts are obscured by the cam gear mate. I've only ever had one head off a civic, so working from memory, you can see the head bolts, but not actually get to them to undo!
SteveMB6
yes all that work is necessary, as john said, the head bolts are under the cams, so all has to be removed. ive done it twice now.
SteveMB6
£1700 is way too expensive btw...! I would not be paying that, shop around
johngreen537
X2! It's only realisticall 6 hours work (probably less in Honda as they should know the cars inside out!)Parts should be less than £100, including all washers you need to replace etc, so thats a muchos ammount of labour charge! scottravenhill
dealers never know the cars inside out, that is the problem. and if there is a book time for a job and they can do it quicker then thats their earner and your loss unfortunately. but does sound highly excessive. adman
Thanks for the replies guys. £1700 is steap indeed. They have given me a breakdown, all of which (based on parts) is quite expensive. From memory (as it's at home) it's along the lines of:Head gasket - £866Timing Belt - £275Aux belts - £110Water pump - £357Even based on Honda parts prices that still leaves a hefty overhead for labour.Happy to have a crack at it myself. Long time since I've done a head gasket and those were back in my mini/moggie days and A series engines look a lot let complicated... Shame about the cam gear having to be removed as that presumably makes setting the timing right rather more complicated?Adam.

johngreen537
Head gasket - £866 --> OMG!http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/b16a2-b18c6-b18c4 ... 3a60907720 is 'just' actual HG, but you can get a COMPLETE gasket kit:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HONDA-CIVIC-HEAD- ... 4ce21824f6Or, a spoon one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/spoon-head-gasket ... 1c14a7ded0Timing Belt - £275 --> OMG!http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HONDA-CIVIC-1-8-V ... 359a690d25Aux belts - £110 --> OMG!http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HONDA-PRELUDE-2-2 ... 1e5b5f8717Water pump - £357 --> OMG!http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HONDA-CIVIC-1-6-1 ... 3363655307The CAM belt, I'd definatekly change while you have it off anyway, waterpump, guess that's a 'wise' choice, but if you've no issues with it, i wouldbn't bother TBH, aux belts, only if you have to! scottravenhill
I dont think the Gaskets should be that expensive, Im at work at the moment and for a Mazda 6 2.2d 2009 the gasket kit is only £265 before discount and thats Mazda OE parts
