  1. Haha thanks man! I duno, I think it all comes a bit naturally for me, I've always been in to cars. Literally since I was a kid. I raced motocross for Kent so there was a lot of engine rebuilds, servicing and so on, I'd usually kill an engine every 4 weeks so it's an essential to be able to fix it, either that or always be paying someone else to do so Don't get too good mate, you'll have every family member asking you to fix this or have a look at that haha Forums, especially this one is very valuable in learning what's what and getting decent advice 1"£££$££"!! I'm sure I'll have another M at some point, I was planning on putting a B18 Spec R in this M but funds won't allow just yet, mainly due to the insurance. I expect I'll buy another MB, strip it and do the above, proper sleeper I'll stay on here even if I don't have an M. Probably the best forum I use. Thanks again matey. harVTEC
  2. Well as mentioned above, despite all of the money, time and effort I have just spent on the car I'll be putting it up for sale tomorrow once I've got some up to date pictures for a for sale thread. I want a SSB facelift EK3 for a bit of a change, you don't see many facelift EK3s either (one of the many reasons I want one). harVTEC
  3. Thanks mate, gota start somewhere My problem is once I get started, I can't stop, I was out in the garage at 3AM one morning cleaning up every last bolt, removing old gaskets and having a perfectly clean surface. Then I'd be up at 6AM and get straight back out there The car feels completely different, I have stalled it more times in the last week that I have since starting to drive, trying to get used to a clutch that engages lower on the pedal was tricky, also no more clutch slip so you either go or you stall unlike before! The car feels much more responsive and it is definately faster, I suppose with the vales all grinded in, skimmed head, headgasket and what not my compression is probably back to where it should be. The engine is also much quieter and smoother now Thanks again everyone. harVTEC
  4. Because it's 99% picture it takes an age to load too Damn, I thought he'd done the build twice! Well I know how you boys like a good bit of picture whoring No edited so it loads a bit quicker harVTEC
  5. Oops :/ I thought I had posted it twice, the first time I submitted it I got an 'Cannot display this webpage' page come up, luckily I copied and pasted my post before, posted it again thinking it hadn't gone on. Doh. Cheers matey, was hard work but looking back on it is was definately worthwhile, wouldn't like to think what a garage would have charged for what I did? harVTEC
  6. Thanks mate, as above, it really does mean a lot when others appreciate the work you put in to something It's not as daunting as it first seems, my Haynes manual was mint when I started, now it looks a little beaten up haha! Learnt a lot doing it, which in my opinion is one of the best parts harVTEC
  7. Feels like a completely different car now! Well worth it all Thanks mate. harVTEC
  8. Thanks man Means a lot. I did it over a week, it would have been less but the place that skimmed my head took their time! harVTEC
  9. Ah really? Do you see many down that way? I've only ever seen 1 other in the flesh. That's a proper job, where you can see your work! None of this office stuff harVTEC
  10. Nah wanted to do it right, not something I fancy doing again any time soon! That's my Grandparent's Chesil, real enough to drive tho Cheers. harVTEC
  11. So, time to update. Warning, it's a big one Got the car all loaded up with all my gear to go to my Grandparent's house and get started The joys of having a big car ey Once I got there I started by taking off any bits that would be in the way when removing the engine, disconnecting hoses etc. Then took the radiator out, and got cracking on removing the driveshafts: I recently had a CV boot done and christ knows what torque the hub to driveshaft nut was done up to! Check out my lever bar: More general disconnecting . removal of parts: The gear linkage pin was a b*****d! Did not want to come out, took almost a day, including many broken punches, screwdrivers and a lot of sore knuckles! Engine was finally ready to come out, was surprised to find I had disconnected everything! Was expecting something to be left attached: Then I caught my finger in the b*****d jack and was left with this: Oil filter removal tool: After that there was plenty of photos of hoses, wires and what not. Mainly for when it all went back together. This along with sandwich bagging and labelling everything was a good decision Next I started the strip the engine down so I could get the head skimmed the next day. Inlet manifold off: Rocker cover and valve lifters off: Camshaft out: Up early the next morning to get the cylinder head off: Valves out: Head was then sent off for skimming, leaving me to get the gearbox off and replace the clutch: Diagnoses - it's f**ked: Nice bit of new vs. old: Cleaned the gearbox up, think most of the clutch dust ended up in my lungs but meh. Sanded the block and box down as I planned on painting it, it looked much better after sanding all the crap / corrosion off of it and I discovered how s**t I was with a paint brush so I decided to leave it sanded: Fitted the new clutch as I was still waiting on the head, got the gearbox back on as well: Next up was giving the inlet mani and EGR valve a good clean up. Before: After: By then I had the head back so set about grinding in the valves, to be fair they weren't too bad but thought I may as well do them all properly while it's in pieces. Obviously your usual pitting on the valve seats and valves. The weather then took a turn for the worse so I ended up spending a good day on these, using a blob of course compound, then checked it out to see how much had been removed, then another go with course then a couple of rounds with the fine. Did it all by hand, I know some people stick a drill on the valve stem and power through them that way, but I didn't fancy that. One done, one not: Just some general pictures of grinding in the valves: All done and cleaned up, next was fitting my new valve stem oil seals and the valves: Fitted the new headgasket and head, all bolts torqued up correctly blah blah blah. Then the camshaft and valve lifters refitted: Fitted my new waterpump, timing belt and tensioner and timed up the engine: Started putting everything back on: Gave the bay a bit of a clean up while my Grandma cleaned my air filter and timing belt cover So after all that it was a case of getting the engine back in, plumbed, refit everything, gearbox and engine oil and what not. Bled the clutch and so on, then the dreaded turning of the key :/ IT STARTED, first time and idled perfectly. The only thing I did wrong in the entire thing was put the hose that connects from the inlet mani to the brake servo. So on my test drive I had no braking assistance! Once I realised I turned the hose round and all was well! Just need to do my valve clearances again as a couple of inlet valves are a little tight and find out why I my EML light is on, I think it's the O2 sensor on the exhaust, the wires look ruined. Bare in mind I have never done anything this big, I've done the usual mechanics, replacing parts and what not but this was my first complete engine overhaul. I've now covered 500 miles so I'm going to check everything over, tighten anything that's come loose and just generally give it a good inspection. So far there's been no clutch slip, no overheating and it feels like a different car Not bad seeing as I only had my Grandad help me get the engine out and drive me round haha Cheers for reading. harVTEC
  12. Looking good mate, what were the Koni shocks like that were on it before? harVTEC
  13. I would say all good but I gave myself a nice juicy blood blister on the trolley jack earlier, crushed my other hand under an engine mount and christ knows what else! Cheers mate, I'll be updating with my progress so far, as soon as my photos upload to PB. Thanks everyone. harVTEC

  15. Thanks mate, I love this kind of thing. I'll happily be outside doing stuff on my car without hearing another person speak all day Sometimes it relaxes me, other times it p**ses me off haha, bolts snapping, seals constantly leaking and what not All part of it harVTEC

  19. Hi everyone, thought I'd start up my build thread. You'll have to bare with me, I've copied and pasted it all over from civiclife.net so the first post will be huge! Been meaning to do it for a while, just haven't got round to it Hope you all enjoy, some big updates coming soon. harVTEC Alright everyone, Always wanted a build thread but by the time I thought to make on I had already done a fair bit without any before pictures. But after today I thought I may as well start one. The car: This is my first car, and being 17 and already being raped by insurance there aren't going to be any modifications really. I refuse to do any heavy mods without declaring them, and declaring them means £££ so I'd rather sit it out until I have a few years NCB under my belt. After my Dad bought an ATR I decided I wanted an MB Civic, which had to be a 1.5 Sport in nighthawk black, and after waiting over a year I picked up Dimitri (my Mum named it :/) in October 2010. It is exactly what I wanted and came up a few miles from my house. Mods so far: - Painted grille and badge - Painted rear numberplate recess - Painted and de-tangoed headlights - Debadged bootlid - Rear spoiler removed - Centre silencer removed from the exhaust - HKS panel filter - Painted calipers - Accord Type R gearknob - MG ZS180 rear anti roll bar - Plasma dials and heater control fascia - Civic Jordan alloys (off the car ATM) - Air intake re-sonator removed - De-cat Haven't got many pictures of it really but I hollowed out an OEM manifold/cat today so thought I'd start: The 'maniverter' After much frustration and self inflicted injuries I was left with this: I was getting no where with a hammer and screwdriver :/ So out came the big boys A few hours later and some damaged knuckles I was left with this Next was a much deserved coffee Then on to fitting To sum it up it has certainly made a difference, the design of the mani is complete s**t, so I think I may have free'd it up a little. Plenty of pops and back throttle noises now Here's a few pictures of what it looks like now, well sort of, these are a little old Thanks for having a look, C&C welcomed Lots of plans, so now I've started a build up I'll be photgraphing anything I do and update here Thanks again. harVTEC Thought I'd stick a few pictures up as I detailed the car yesterday Old dials: New dials harVTEC Alright everyone, Big update now, over the last week I've been building up stuff for the car, nothing flash but all seriously needed parts. I'm taking the engine out on Monday, sending the head off to be skimmed and doing the full works on the engine. Going to clean up the bay, sand the engine and box, paint everything silver, rocker cover wrinkle red and exhaust manifold black. Will also sand and spray any mank looking mounts etc. Certainly got my work cut out! This is why my Mum get's p**sed off with me, the house resembles a car shop! Big thanks to JDM.Jonno for the clutch, cannot reccommend the bloke enough, most genuine, caring, fastest seller I've ever dealt with. True legend. Sim Auto Parts for the timing belt and tensioner, came really quick. Everything else was bought elsewhere haha. Wish me luck :/ harVTEC
