WilkesyMB6 Posted June 18, 2010 Share Posted June 18, 2010 Right i got to get a set of new tyres for my new wheels. i think the standard is 195/55/15 i want 50's but would anyone change the 50's to 45's? Better all round size, as it's a lower profile than standard, but still leaves room for comfort over our growing number of potholes. And as the 50's are one of the most popular sizes out there, they tend to be cheaper I had the Toyo T1R's.......superb tyre, great in the wet/dry. Dawns still got mine on her deck! gazman Posted June 21, 2010 Share Posted June 21, 2010 Wilkesy just FYI (and anyone else who's interested!) the profile is a percentage of overall tire width and not mm. A profile drop of 55 to 50 is already 3% shorter diameter overall meaning 3% higher gearing and speedo reading 3% higher than before. The actual tire sidewall height goes from 107mm down to 98mm which is fair increase in stiffness with most tires. Dropping to 45 (still at 195 width) means a sidewall of just 88mm which is getting on for very low profile.To give you an extreme example, a Ferrari 430 uses 35 profile tires which you'd think was far lower profile. But they're 285mm wide meaning the overall sidewall height is 100mm - in between an Integra and an MB6. It just looks very "low profile" due to the much larger 19" rim - the overall wheel diameter is almost 15% greater than the wheels on our cars.Point is sticking stupidly low profile tires on relatively small diameter and slim wheels is only going to ruin comfort AND performance. Smaller diameter wheels already feel much more of the smaller bumps than larger diameter wheels.Bear in mind an Integra Type R with 215 45 16's has a sidewall height of 97mm, and that along with the suspension is plenty stiff enough!It's best to keep within a few % of stock overall diameter to maintain accurate speedo as well as not c**king up the ABS.Have a play around with this great tire calculator, it'll give you a much clearer idea of how to best match tire sizes and even rim size to a given tire width.http://www.rimsntires.com/rt_specs.jsp Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
