Mot Failure- Emissions

Hi all,

Need a bit of advice, for starters the cars a 1999 D16b2 1.6 non vtec Aerodeck. I took it for Mot yesterday and it failed on the emissions test.

It failed on:

-Carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive

-hydrocarbon content after 2nd idle excessive

The Mot guys said it was miles out, but wasnt anymore descriptive than that.

Is this more likely to be the Lambda sensor or the Cat?

Also Ive seen two different lambda sensors for sale, a Pre-cat and a Post-cat sensor, so i presume the car has two sensors? one before and one after the cat? if so is it worth changing both?

Change both fast idle is when the cat should be warming up and reducing the emissions to a safe level but I think it depends if the lambda is picking up the reading right I would just change both not worth messing with.

Cheers guys,

After getting under car, realised it only has one sensor (precat). Found a cheap site: Wanapart.co.uk and bought universal sensor which came with heat rap wires, a new cat, and cat fitting kit. Fitted them yesterday, will have to se what mot man says later in week.

A freind also said it may be the timing, if it fails again might just as garage to adjust timing for me.

a little tip for mot time !

on the way for the mot give the car as much stick as poss to get the cat up to working temp

that way when its on the computer the cat should be working at the propper temp ?

cats work better at high tempretures ;)

also a service within that week will help too :)
