Suspension - What fits

Devilfish

Recommended Posts

I've been looking around at lowering my MB2, but tbh, it's a bit of a minefield, with dealers not really knowing more than whats written on the box....

As far as I can tell, and please, correct me if I'm wrong, the MB, EK and EJ share the same suspension....do they?

So, if I were to get a coilover kit for a 2000 EK or EJ, it should fit?

I see a lot of kits described as "rear fork type" which I assume means the little U shaped metal bracket at the bottom. Does this mean the front end is the same as mine, i.e. the removable bracket?

What about earlier models? I've seen kits for 91-00 models then described as "for EG"....are these different?

Sorry, a lot of questions and they've probably been gone over many times, but I just don't want to buy the wrong parts...

TIA

Paul

EK/EJ kits do fit BUT the car will sit lower and the kit isnt designed for the extra weight altho its not a massive problem.

Ive got a EJ/EK kit on my mb6, FK Highsports. Although I wont recomend them as FK Automotive are a bunch of knobs

MeisterR do a kit for the M series civics, I'd look into that. Atleast you know its for the car then

On a budget, so trying to keep costs down......

Trying to convince the gf that it's just as cost effective to buy a cheaper coilover kit as it is to replace all 4 shocks (even tho she thinks it's too low as standard...!!! )

The extra weight shouldn't be a problem with height adjustable coilovers tho.....should it?

the weight plays a huge difference in the 'rebound'..

ie when you drive over a ditch or pothole!

i would recommend good quality springs over a cheap coilover kit although i contradict myself as my friends bmw e36 rides lovely on £150 coilovers..

On the rear coil overs from an Ek or ej you will have to have gym wound right up to sit right the adjusted pretty hard to stop the rear arches catching the it's pretty undrivable cos there so hard recommend miesters or weetecs mgzs shocks with loading springs!!

Well something needs to be done cos my current standard (probably original factory fitted) dampers are leaking....

Priced up a full set at over £200 and a set of springs at over £100, so I figure spending a bit more on coilovers isn't a problem...well for me. I'm sure the gf would have something to say about it, lol

And, tbh, coilover springs from somewhere like Demon Tweeks aren't expensive, so it wouldn't be to much of a problem to replace the rear ones....

£200 for a set of coil overs.......The term wouldnt touch with a barge pole springs to mind

and coilover springs...do you mean those ones which try to turn your existing suspension into coilovers? You sure thats a good idea?

If you want coilovers buy a proper set. Remember this links the car to the road, scrimping on suspension is like buy the cheapest, nastiest tyres you possibly can. Plain stupid imo!

The main problem I've found is the confusion with the US 96-00 civics, which are EKs; you'll get the problems stated above. I've even sent a photo to Hardrace to assure them the MB existed (to be fair, it's quite unlikely they'd ever see one!). Have you heard/thought about the MGZS option? That'll give you a 30mm drop & will fit within the budget you state, even less if you get breakers parts. Loads of earlier posts on the subject.

A minefield it certainly is. Good luck!
