Got everything ready, tools, new clutch, axle stands, car jack etc etc etc. Gone to grab my 5 litre bottle of Landrover MTF and can't find it anywhere! The only place open tomorrow to buy oil will be Halfords, but what grade oil do I go for????They have Halfords 75/80 multi grade gear oil, Comma MT75 which meets ford standards, Comma SX75w/90 semi synthetic, Castrol Fully synthetic 75w-90, Castrol driveline syntrax Universal 75w-90 fully syntheticThere's also a Castrol 80w-90 for to lubricate spur and helical gears, and a Castrol 80-90 recommended in hypoid differentials.Which one do I buy????Help would be really great, only got a few hours to find some in morning.Cheers, Chris Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
weetec Posted September 22, 2012 Share Posted September 22, 2012 castrol engine oil 10/40 wont kill anything for a couple of weeks..or even months depending what your driving is like. its consistency is thicker than gear oil so wont leave inner transmission gubbins un-lubricated. weetec Posted September 22, 2012 Share Posted September 22, 2012 you get race oil and standard oil, dip your finger in each and watch how fast it drips off the race oil. its actually bad as it drips off metal faster leaving unlubricated components metal to metal contact. thick oil leaves a thicker film of oil protecting the components when they meet. so dont worry about.. granny shift for a week on the 10/40...... core blimey i know how to bull5hi7 you know what i mean. Hondamad1988 Posted September 23, 2012 Author Share Posted September 23, 2012 After hours of research and lots of different information, I've found the exact specification of the landrover MTF on CRXUK, which is supposed to be identical to Honda MTF and the Halfords 75w-80 is the same GL-4 spec as Land rover MTF.Also from what I've read 75w-80 is the same thickness and viscosity as a 10-40 engine oil once you have taken into account the SAE conversion rates, the difference being that the gear oil have extra additives to protect the metals in the gearbox.I will post the Landrover MTF specs on a seperate page later, might be usefull to someone Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
