hi there.

i seem doomed when it comes to cars.

my beloved civic has started making a sort of purring ticking noise when acelerating. sounds almost like a diesel.

strangely my last prelude also made the very same noise.

i have changed oil and filter. no diference.

could it be tappets or am i being paranoid?

still seems to pull hard so no issues with performance.

any help much appreciate. thanks

engine noise are always a hard thing to put your finger on with out hearing them . could you get a video of the engine making the noise and post it up this will help . Were does the sound come from the top end or bottom end of the engine? what is the millage on the engine ? have you ran it low on oil ? Rich.

hey,

hmmm well. its always had plenty of oil. probably a little overdue a change this time mind (did it the other day)

i have found an invoice in the service history that says the tappets were adjusted in 2002 so not for a while ay. ha

to be honest i dont think a camera would pick it up over all the background noise. you can here it most with all windows up resonating into the cab.

i definately think its top end. very fast purring ticking noise other than that seems ok.

there is also a kind of faint squeal but im positive that is coming from the alternator or tensioner ( not to worried bout that, wait til it dies and replace)

engine has done 92k and has been regularly serviced. i dont thrash it too much just every now and again.

but who can say what previous owners have done. b series are supposed to be indestructable arent they?

thanks for quick replies. ;)

they are pretty bullet proof, but only of they are maintained properly!! The tappets should be adjusted every 2 years/24,000 miles, so they are well overdue. Unless you have had the car serviced at main dealers or Honda specialists, i would suspect the tappets have not been adjusted, so i would get that done first mate!! ;)

right then. so im on the right track. i'll get the tappets sorted first. hope that cures it.

honestly though i just kill cars...

i care for them more than average billy bob but ultimately i end up killing the engines.

well fingers crossed its got a few more years in it.

thanks jalesi2001

what are TAPPETS??lol

Tappets is another name for Valve Clearances. Its the gap between the rocker arm and the valve in your head. They have to be set to certain measurements, too lose and you loose performance and get a rattle type noise from the top of your engine, too tight and you can loose compression, and ultimately burn out your valves. (Very rare on a honda though in my experience!!!)

Its part of the Honda service schedule to have them checked and adjusted, up to 1999 if you are on 6,000 mile interval service schedule, they req. adjusting every 24,000 miles or 2 years.

After 1999, (iirc!) you will be on 9,000 miles service schedule, and so you will need to have them adjusted every 27,000 miles, or 3 years!! :ugeek:8-)
