cleared all the snow off the car and cleaned up the contacts on the battery and the car started up fine! there me thinking I had solved the issue but no turned it off left it a bit to try again and yup the horrible grinding noise is back, I think its the starter teeth on the flywheel but not sure what's causing it :(

it could quite easily just be a dud starter/on its way out now since its 24 years old now, but they say to check that its not just one of the bolts just come loose! but I've got a replacement on hand anyway just in case.
