The '88 Accord! Now in hibernation.

Recommended Posts

The time appears to be looming for the old girl to make her return to the road!

A few months ago me and my mate went over to my grans house where the car had been sitting on the driveway for a year with a can of fuel, jump leads and the towing bar!

We got to the car, popped the bonnet and connected the battery and tried it, after about 20 seconds of turning she fired all by herself, no jump leads needed! Only problem we had was my brother who had used the car last had parked it with the handbrake on!

That didn't stop me driving it off the drive with the rears locked as it was against a wall, so with the car on the street my mate used the towing bar to hit the rear drums as we tried and eventually free'd off the rears!

With the car running and a bit of fuel in it we took it around my grans estate, it's just one big loop with a small road that leads back to the main road so nice and quiet there! Car felt absolutely fine! Took a good few miles of going round this loop to clear the build up off the brakes!

So after the drive we parked the car back on my grans driveway but in the middle of it this time as I had planned to get it in for a service and checked over to see if I needed anything to MOT the old girl!

But a couple of weeks ago my gran rang up saying someone had bent the passenger door!

So my dad got some tarpaulin and some rope and we covered the car.

Last week we got in touch with a local bodyshop we've used a few times recently and have been told that we may be able to get her in this week to have the door sorted out! We're not looking for a perfect job, we just need it to be water tight!

So I have a couple of pictures from yesterday and of the damage to the door! [smash.gif]

I still think this is the best sticker ever seen on the car!

Yeah 2.0 12v on a carb with an automatic choke!

Needs a fresh tank of fuel, 14month old juice has upset her a bit but we have not long ago dropped her off at the bodyshop to get the door sorted, guy quoted us £40-50 provided the window doesn't shatter

Once she's back we need to replace the n/s/f spring and hopefully she's ready for an MOT! 8-)

If parts were free then yeah

Replacement spring cost about £30 so she'll stay in her standard guise for now! B18 lump has been talked about before though! Would be a mega project and would make an awesome sleeper, but the car has so much character as she is!

Had to laugh driving her to the bodyshop last night, the fuel that's in the tank is around 14 months old, took the key out to leave the car and she dies, comes back to life and dies again!

Fresh fuel needed me thinks! I wander how she'd respond to £20 of VPower nitro fairy dust whatever they've called it now! [smash.gif]

Hopefully hear something about the door today! ecstatic.gif1

It already has, we bought it for £150 back in 2009 and has so far only needed the alternator refurbing after it siezed, a brake line replacing and the current snapped spring

Not bad to say she's probably covered 20,000 miles in the time we've had her! [smitten.gif]

I was told yesterday that the door has been sorted! £50 is the damage and apparentyl the window is still good, happy days!

Unfortunately none of us are free to fetch her until next week, but until then, here's a photo from the end of the End2End in John O'Groats! :D

Well I fetched her yesterday, door looks pretty good, only one or two signs that it had been bent and it shuts perfectly fine, the window works and wasn't smashed when it was bent back! Bonus! :D

The heavens opened up on the way home too but at least I know the door is water tight again!

First thing I did though was bung £15 of fuel in her, she was struggling like hell but within minutes of putting fresh go go juice in she was behaving better! Now back at home the plan this weekend will be to drop the oil, get the sump off and clean it up. We're going to seal the fracture it's got and see how it holds! At the same time the nearside front suspension strut is coming out so we can replace the broken spring and also just check the rubbers and brakes too!

See how we get on!

Do you have somewhere sheltered as the weather is not going to be the best according to the forcast :(

No, we've not got any shelter, so we'll have to keep an eye out on the weather, it sounds like (and feels like) the roof is getting blown off here at work as it is

The Accord got some TLC on Saturday! My brother offered to do the work at his garage after hours, happy days!

So here's what was done.....

The only picture I've got of the door since it's been done!

IMAG1174_zpsc91d27e9.jpg

New front spring being fitted!

IMAG1176_zps90447e3e.jpg

Here's the old spring, not bad for 25 years old!

IMAG1177_zps41a5c044.jpg

Accord being pampered the only way my brother knows how!

It was having a CV boot replaced!

IMAG1178_zps03a69306.jpg

And finally a picture of the A20a engine, just an oil and filter change, first one since 2009 when we aquired it!

IMAG1175_zpsfffef20d.jpg

She's having her MOT done today, fingers crossed! But we couldn't find anything obvious that needed doing other than the CV boot, front spring and a set of wiper blades!
