Accelerator Sticking

Anyone had this?

Started for me a few months back. Sitting at the lights and the car's doing 3.5k revs! Pleased I got the exhaust fixed when I did... Kept this up for a while until I pulled over a few miles down the road. Pushed the spring back on the throttle body and it was fine again.

Anyway, I oiled and greased the spring on the throttle body, gave the exposed end of the cable a clean. It kept doing it occasionally, so I cleaned this up a few times. Which maybe helped, but it's still doing it. Last few days it has been even worse. Although it only seems to be sticking for a few seconds at a time now, it can go up to 6k revs between gear changes!

New cable needed maybe?

Deffo try a new cable mate! Once these wear out, it's almost impossible to get them moving freely again. Have a good look around the throttle body, maybe get someone to press the accelerator whilst you have a look, see if you can pin point whats sticking.Might be an idea to disconnect the throttle cable and move the throttle manually to see if it still sticks, as this would rule out/ rule in the cable itself as being the cause. ;-)

Yeah, I think I will disconnect the cable and try to see what is moving freely and what isn't. Hopefully it's an easy fix.

This isn't really related (or maybe it is...?) but my car has a really awkward accelerator. It was the very first thing I noticed when I test drove it. I'm used to it now, but it's like it has a bit of slack in the cable, then it stops and it's really heavy! Like a button. Keeping that in between point, needed for good clutch control, is a skill I'm still refining 3 years on.... Is that just my motor, or do we all have this problem? First thing I did was tighten up the cable to take up any slack, but it didn't seem to help much. Despite their reliability, I've not found these to be the most refined cars, and I just put it down to that.

Took the cable off today, and it was rough to say the least. Obviously no lubricant in there whatsoever, and possibly lots of filth as it kept sticking at different points, and those points seemed to keep moving. So it's had copious amounts of brake cleaner and wd40 down there, to disperse any crap, followed by s**t loads of oil until it was running smooth.

Thought I'd try it out. First junction I came to, I touched the accelerator and almost shot out into the traffic! So it seems my heavy pedal issue is fixed, and I now need to relearn how to drive my car.

Only time will tell if the sticking is fixed, but I'm optimistic.
