Krzys
Ah right, did you put a new gasket on when you replaced the sump?
fyfie5
I didn't replace it, so I don't know.
Krzys
Ah right, it might be that it either needs a new one or just cleaning up, refitting and bit of gasket sealant to help it maybe? Least you'll end up with fresh oil again!
WilkesyMB6
Worth having another look or taking it back to the garage as you will be surprised how fast it will leak out sometimes!
vtec2011
Mine leaks a tad around the crank pulley area. Even my old MB3 did too. How bad is it? Enough to make the driveway messy?
fyfie5
yep its round the crank pulley and it doesn't drip that much when the cars just sitting, but I can see under the car a lot of stuff is just coated in oil obviously when I drive it the oil gets thinner and leaks out quicker. Its down to about 1/4 full now. Will top it up a bit and I'm taking it back to the garage tomorrow evening so he can have a look.
fyfie5
Are you not gonna slap your Dads 1.6 into it?!? haha that would be cool! but its my only car and wouldn't know where to start.
fyfie5
took it back up this evening and he thinks it might be the crank seal and hasn't had the timing belt in about 80,000 miles so might just get both changed at the same time. Would love to try it myself but all comes back to only having one car. Anyone else done crank seal and timing belt, how hard/how long does it take? vtec2011
I done the timing-belt myself and took me about an 'hour and a half'. This involves removing the engine mount, auxiliary belts and power steering fluid reservoir. Pretty straight forward, it's just when it comes to timing it gets pretty scary But I haven't replaced a crank seal before. I can imagine you have to remove the exhaust manifold and drop the sump to gain excess to the crank seal
philgor
crank seal is behind the crank pulley, pull the engine apart as per doing a cambelt, then pull the pulley off the crank that the cambelt uses. it behind that, best way to pull that out is to screw a self tapping screw in to it and pull out using a set of pliers. getting the new one in it harder, coverit in oil, and tap in to place, with a small hammer, make sure it's fitted correctly. and reassemble. it's one of those job's it will be a bitch to do or it won't...
