Either the chip or the socket. If some of the soldering has gone on the socket it would be the same as the chip going... If you know what I mean? Coz then the ecu wouldn't be able to read the chip.

Not sure how you can test to see if it is the connections to the socket though.. Maybe auto electrician or even an electronics / tv repair place if you tell them what it is you are wanting them to check.

put the socketed ecu back in as last time I did it with wire from J1 removed I never drove it so thot ad try today and drive with it out, it runs fine and vtec comes in same as when mapped should it work fine with J1 wire removed??

Have a look at a guide to socket an obd1 ecu because there's a few other components that are added as well as the socket itself. So could be worth checking those places for dry joints or anything suspect
