  1. See thats the key! There are hardly any old school spray painters left now, and most are the kind who because the car isn't theirs, they don't actually care that much how it turns out. Old school sprayers tend to take a pride in their work, almost as if it's a work of art and they're putting their name to it. So they take care (and time) on all aspects of the job, from the initial preperation work, to the masking it up properly, to the final painting.

  3. Hi krzys,as long as its under three grand then I think I could probably get away with spending that without the wife going tonto and talking of old school ,I have started to look up classic car restorers and see if I can find an old boy

  4. Dave , your right it's laziness and no pride,i was taught to do everyones car as if it were your own(father),bodyshops and garages are all about targets so quality goes right out the window,i have also done painting before and bodywork on my sons cars(because he thinks he is a rally driver)ie sils, wings, bonnets, skirts, front ends, chassis legs and everything in between lol,if my father was alive I would trust him too paint ruby,he was a old school master of spraying and bodywork and what I would call a real perfectionist, but I don't have the time or facility to do it myself and as I don't do it often enough I would probably not meet my standards lol

  6. Well, she got delevered back to me, and she's looking fine! The heater/coolant problem is deffo fixed, which was my main concern, as this could have damaged the engine. Heater is back to roasting your bollocks off! Headlights, I'm not sure if they are at the correct height/level now, won't know till im driving behind Gayle again as she noticed the left was really bright (so thats slightly too high) but the right one was totally blinding (so way to high). So will report back on this when I know. All the loose plastic panels in the engine bay are now fixed, and have the correct clips etc, and on first looks the overspray seems to have been dealt with. I can't tell 100% because its raining here so car was wet, and had to take her on a wee run to make sure the heater problem was fixed, so she was totally filthy when I got back! Needless to say, even though it was raining, I still washed her, then as the rain was going off, chamied her dry and put her in the garage. I'll go out about 10pm because she should be bone dry by then

  7. I think you've hit the nail on the head there Dave tbh ... As much as I agree with a lot of the good sprayers being of the old school, so many of these body shops, approved ones in particular, have such a lot of pressure and time constraints on them that a lot of the time work suffers .. This is not at all getting away from the fact that there is an awful lot of cowboys out there too ! Its just a mine field and I think if you find a single decent bloke, hold onto him with two hands ! So, if I rub here down, drive up to you (looking slightly odd) for a long weekend, you can spray away

  8. Even if I just get the deck done I'll be happy! It's only going to be a small outfit if we get the go ahead. But being smaller means I can take my time doing the cars and means they will turn out sweet.

  11. Im yet to use a body shop for any car ive owned.. And Dave, your horror story isn't the only one that I've heard ! Im reasonably good with a spray gun, did the EK outside with one and it came through alright TBF. But don't have the facilities to do a whole gloss car.. Time will tell I suppose as I want to start having some bits sprayed up next year .. Hopefully she'll be back tonight looking spick n span mate !

  14. Wow! I am indeed proud, and so glad its john that bought her! You're doing an amazing job mate, she looks absolutely mint! Funny you should go down the colour coding route, I tested the water a few years back with her doing just that. I done the rear bumper bump strip, liked it at first, then went off it! Lol so she went back to standard after a brand new bumper was fitted. I should have a PIC somewhere if you want a look? Loving your plans for her mate, new rear arches is what I had planned if I'd kept her. That done, she'll be totally rust free. Colour change??? I love the colour she is, but wanted to do a full respray too. How about a funky 70's metalflake red? That would look amazing, and no other metalflaked ones that I know of, so would be unique. Mind you, the shine you've got on her there it would indeed have to be one hell of a good respray. Perfection is a word she loves! Lol need to meet up sometime mate, get a natter an would love to see Rubes again
