The oil in there seems to make a big difference, if the motor has around 100k or more then thicker oil helps keep it quiet!

That's the one! It looks about the same as mine to be honest and my exhaust is standard size currently!

There's a lad who's got the Mk1 or 2 Golf pickup, ratted of course! Fitted with the BAM engine and then tuned to around 300bhp!

That picture he sent you saying it was done just made me laugh out loud in the office! Have you driven it yet? As for centre pipe, DC2 should fit but I'm not sure if it'll marry up with the CAT. My older brother has the non turbo Mk4 GTi, drives alright but is woeful!

I would say that's probably what's causing the problems with the shifter!

I do like the look of the Mk3 Golf, nearly convinced my mother to buy one so I could drive it when I passed my test (her previous car had just been written off) but she chose a Clio instead and immediately regretted it!
