  1. Wowser! Now that's what I call a work car! That looks mint mate, really nice spec on these too if I remember rightly. Is it a 3L petrol or diesel? That mpg tho!!! lol
  2. Did you do it to your MB mate? Know the eg poses similar issues when doing this mod. Did you get any photos of the internals before and after the cutting? just been out measuring again to see if I can fit it up top (moving switches down to bottom and doing away with the crappy clock) but think it might be tight. Also looking at fitting it below the heater controls and doing away with the ashtray etc as we don't use that anyways. Would need to have it tilted at a slight angle I think though with it being low down, but might be a possibility.
  3. Nah mate, would still need the metal removing. It's the horizontal bit that sits just below the original radio hole. So it's slap bang in the way for the new head unit. Gonna have another look at it later I think before deciding to can the idea. She's off the road till the 31st anyways, as that's when she goes back in for her retest mot and to get her service, so plenty time.
  4. Yeah, everything is a pain to do, though most of the the time the reward outweighs the pain. Was telling Gayle about it when she came home from work. She's seen the work I've put into the console and the weeks I've spent on it so knew I was excited to finally be fitting it. She's said can I not find a way around it after explaining roughly what the problem is, as she thinks it's still worth doing if I can keep the trimming of the dash innards to a minimum. Think she feels it would be a shame to stop now and sell the console after the hard work put in (and the stress is caused with various spanners being thrown into the mix and overcoming them) then see it fitted to another Civic. Will need to think really hard about it as DD is all back together now, so would mean having to yet again strip her down lol.
  5. yeah mate, gutted! Didn't realize that there was so much more involved to it, considering the amount of work that has to go into just creating the D/D console. I might have another think about it later, but really don't relish the though of cutting away the dash innards. Plan B would mean she still looks OEM but would also have the benefit of the motorized screen (and nothing except changing the stereo to return her back to OEM). It would be the easy route with least damage. The headunit can be fitted to the MX5 if need be, although would rather not as might be too tempting for any would be thieves. Will see if there is any interest in the Centre console and head unit from Civic5 members. Would mean anyone wanting to do the conversion would only have the dash innards to do, so 3 quarters of the conversion already done for them.
  6. Hmmm, strange one. I'm guessing the hubs you got (the powder coated ones) are from another D series civic MB/MC? Might be that the 4 x 100 hubs that got fitted are from an integra SRi or an EK4 maybe?
  7. Soooooooooooo.... plan B! Plan B was originally plan A till I got carried away, so willbe purchasing a nice single din head unit with a motorized screen to fit to DD. That way I get the screen and features of the double din without destroying the dash in behind the consol. Will be straight fit, plug n play.
  8. Double din - Mission aborted!! Got the console finished, bought the Xtrons double din android head unit....and there's where the problems began! The Xtrons gets great reviews, despite there being cheap copies of it floating around on Amazon and eBay that are totally crap. Problem 1 (Resolved): The wiring harness for Xtrons. I did a trial of the head unit in DD, to make sure everything worked. I noticed that whenever the car was turned off completely, it lost the memory/time etc. Knew right away that that meant the permanent live/accessory live were round the wrong way. So had to switch those two wires on the Xtrons harness. All soldered then heat shrinked. Problem 2 (Resolved): It ain't a bloody double din head unit, even though it's advertised as being double din!!! It's too wide/tall to fit in a double din cage. So I had to fabricate my own brackets (the ones it comes with would only work in newer cars, not the custom install we have here) and fix it to the console prior to fitting. Did that! Problem 3 (Abort abort!): got DD's original console out (what faff!, forgot how blooming tedious a job that was!) had a look at the heater controls and where I'd be moving them down to. Would need to drill new holes for the screws to mount, no biggie. Offered up the new console (head unit fitted) and bang, there's the problem! In order to get this in with the (not so) Double din unit, I would need to cut away the metalwork behind the dash/console. would also need to try and reshape the metal supports at the side of the dash as these were slightly fowling the heater controls. I never knew there was so much that would need cutting out to fit this. So I sat and looked at it for a while, then came to the conclusion.....I'm not prepared to butcher DD's dash/metalwork just to fit a stereo. The whole idea of this was that it would always be reversible so she could be returned back to stock oem if need be. Hats off to those who have done this though, a lot of work and you have bigger balls than me! lol I just do not want to butcher the car for this. So, end result is I have a head unit all ready wired and ready to go, and a double din dash for a Civic M. If anyone wants to benefit from all the hard work, drop me a pm! The console and head unit may be up for sale. Console isn't perfect, but but it does look pretty OEM. Just needs the double din surround trim to complete (would need to make one as stated above, the radio isn't exactly double din)
  9. Woohooooo! Super excited, the new head unit is here!! Now just got to figure out how to install the damn thing! Doesnt fit in a standard double din cage, instead has brackets so looks like I'm gonna need to fit it to the console then fit the console to the car. Will probably need to fabricate some brackets. Why is nothing ever easy!
  10. @dr_broonYes, member on here did a custom job on his door cards to incorporate large cup holders (think it was one of our newer members) looked awesome and worked perfect!

    Aftermarket parts

Haha, plenty of tutorials in the forum mate. I'm in the middle off doing one for the centre console double din conversion so keep an eye out for that one if you like a challenge! @justhans
  12. Deffo mate, the arm rest ones I have sitting on a shelf in the garage............I found them to be next to useless in the car lol. The ITR one should fit in nicely, just need to see how I'm gonna do it lol
  13. Thanks Dan! Yes, deffo looks oem, and will also fool quite a few who are familiar with these cars too! lol That exterior surround isn't going in \DD though that its temp fitted to just now, that's just a scabby old spare which is also grey so no good. Been hunting in the garage and found my oem Integra (DC2) TypeR cupholder, the one that pops out from the dash. So hoping to see if that can be fitted in along with the double din. Even if I have to sacrafice the ashtray, I wouldn't mind as thats never been used and wont evr get used so be nice to have something useful there. Plus the fact its the one thing these cars are totally missing, should have had cupholders designed into them when new! It's not like there weren't any drive-throughs in 1995 onwards! So once its all fitted, it'll bring DD bang up to date technology wise, and convenience wise.
  14. Sooooo, the double din dash conversion panel is completed! Actually really pleased with it, even if it was a total pain in the ass to do! Some pics below, hope you like!
  15. yeah, really happy with the garage and the mechanic (Kenny), they did the mot on Mindy and again, were impressed by her condition. I'm gonna get them to fix the wee leak they spotted on the steering rack (said it was miniscule so nothing to worry about for now) and also the oil leak she has (from when I fitted the brand new rocker cover bolts from Honda and one sheared off!). See if they fancy the job of drilling out the old snapped bolt as I'm not sure I fell confident enough. Oil is seeping out the corner of the rocker cover so would like it fixed. RE the console catastrophy, luckily it's just the paint thats reacted and went all yucky. The plastic itself is sound. I've got most of that crap paint sanded back off now so it's back to being smooth again. Will get it into (decent) paint this weekend then see about choosing DD's new double din head unit.
  16. In other news, DD went for her mot today...................and failed! TBF, I took a chance knowing her handbrake was crap! That was all she failed on though so I'm happy. The chap at the garage is and older guy, been a mechanic most of his life. When I went to pick her up, he had me there for an hour blethering about DD! Said that he was really impressed with her, and that he used to work for a Honda dealership many moons ago and loved old Honda's! Currently drives a mk2 CRV himself and swears by Honda. He said he was surprised when he had her up on the ramp, saying that she was immaculate, even underneath! Said he could see she has been well cared for, and really likes her! after talking for a while, agreed the work on the rear brakes to get them spot on. They're also going to fit the brand new rear discs I got for DD, then she's getting a full "big" service as she's not had one for years (not done enough miles) but has now hit 10K since last one so deffo due. Said the big service will see everything done, new filters, new oil, new spark plugs, all brakes stripped down and cleaned greased etc. He said to make sure I keep looking after her the way we have as she's a stunner and not many around now. So seems DD has got a new fan, and we have finally found our decent garage down here!
  17. So decided that I wasn't happy with it, even though it was almost perfect joins wise etc. So decided to do more filling/sanding smoothing. Had noticed it wasnt even around the console when fitted, so masked console and started applying bumper filler followed by knifing filler for a smooth finish. got it sanded to a super smooth finish, and the joins were perfect. Once into rpimer, couldnt see any joins and all the contours were spot on! Spent hours sanding and shaping it so was really pleased! Went to get more satin black paint, got it from Halfords (my 1st mistake!) I should have learned from the past! Halfords paint is the worst ever! 2nd mistake was applying the halfords paint onto the lovely surround! Paint reacted and ruined it!!!!!! in this photo, you can see how nice the shape/joins turned out. Unfortunately, heres what the paint did on the rest of it! To say i'm gutted is an understatement! Halfords should be banned from selling this shit! I should have remembered from when I was doing the wheel refurbs the first time round, the lacquer was soft as hell and went flat and dull after a week. then rain/brake dust marked it all with in 2weeks. So, word of warning, do not buy paint from Halfords! I'm not beat though! I'll sand the paint off and then prep for painting again. Will use proper paint (same as first time I painted it) so the end result should hopefully be perfect.
  18. Thanks guys! Just been and bought the fine filler and more satin black. Will report back once it's done
  19. Thanks mate! Took a hella lot of work and many hours (and wasted a few consoles trying to get it right!) but overall happy with it so far. Good thing is, If I want to it can all be reverted back to oem dash. Would love to get the console 3D printed but from what I've seen and read would cost a fortune. Might still look into it though.
  20. So, time for a bit of an update! I have started the double din conversion for DD. So, here's where we started! I cut the lower horizontal part of the single din section out of the spare dash I had. With that cut out, I then did the opposite with another spare dash and cut out the upper horizontal part of the dash. Next, the two parts were offered up together with the double din cage that I bought, to see how they fitted together. Pretty good as it goes, although there was a small gap of about 5mm between the two halves. This needed much work with resin and fibreglass to make it strong enough not to break. After fiberglass I used areldite chemical metal to fill over the join. and showing the rear After this, I sanded the filler smooth, and reshaped it to match contours of the dash. Then, sprayed with plastic primer. Once paint had dried, it was onto satin black... even though it can't be seen, I sprayed the rear of the panel too. The black looks shiny as this was straight after painting it so its still wet. It dries to an almost oem satin finish. I noticed on some of the conversions I've seen, the bottom half of the dash is now too long due to adding in the extra din size. This meant the little cubby tray at the bottom sits way down past the bottom of the console. I wanted to avoid that as I didnt think it looked right, so I cut around 5cm from the bottom of the bottom sections uprights (the bit where the heater would originally sit below the original radio). Can see where I've cut it in the first phot below of it fitted to the console... How it looks all roughly fitted together (clock is hanging our lol) Sooo, after fitting it together I have decided that I'm going to go over the joins with a fine filler, to get it absolutely perfect. It's hard to see the joins to be fair, but my ocd knows they are there! So will mask of the sides and then fill it so it matches all contours perfectly. Then just a case of spraying it again. All in all, really happy that I've got the bulk of it done and how it's turned out. Think once I'm finished, you'd be hard pushed to tell it didn't come from the factory like this! Then I need to choose the head unit!
  21. That was a nice easy fix, if only they were all like that! Loving the tablet install mate, looks really good! I'm part way through doing the double din conversion for DD, will post pics soon!

    My new german

wow, another car!! lol you're as bad as I was when I was young, always changing my cars lol FN2 looks sweet mate, miss both my FN1 and FN2. Nice low miles on that one too! One thing to check on or around that mileage is the synchros in the gearbox and the clutch. On mine at those miles, both 2nd and 3rd gear syncros gone (common fault). I was lucky, Honda agreed to pay for it on mine as it was a design flaw and I still had a bit of warranty from Western Honda. One way to test is rag it 1st 2nd and 3rd (like almost red lining it). Any crunch going up from 1st to 2nd then 2nd to 3rd and probably on the way out. Can be stiff changing from 3rd back to 2nd too. Other than that, bloody awesome cars! I was just got too old for the stiff suspension lol. Deffo want another FN at some point, one of my fav cars! Just love them!
