So was my birthday yesterday (Yay! Happy birthday to me! lol) So, got some lovely pressies! And Gayle's pressies were things I'd been wanting for absolute ages!! Soooo, without further adoo, Mindy's new additions! (hang on, thought it was my birthday, no Mindy's!) 1st up, Gayle got me a mx5 shelf bag. This fastens to the studs that normally take the tonnaeu cover. Didn't even know they made these for them! Awesome bit of kit and gives a nice bit of extra storage. Next up, OEM windbreaker with built in pocket (again, every bit of extra storage is a bonus!) Mega happy with these, the wind break makes a huge difference at 60mph and above, and the bag will be excellent for any trips away we do in Mindy

Damn I miss my TypeS and TypeR now! lol Looking sweet mate, really nice FN2 that! Front lip was a mega bonus eh! Not one I've seen before but really like it! Makes a change from the common as muck mugen one!

Now that past Dave has stopped waffling in the above post (past Dave: Oi! I heard that! ), here's what I've been doing! Finally did the mod I've been wanting to do for ages (since I had Ruby infact)....fit the one thing our Civic M's really lack...cupholders! Bought a oem jdm Integra DC2 cup holder years ago to fit to Ruby but never got round to it. So it's now fitted to DD. Had to do a bit of modding to get it to fit, but it's in and looks factory fitted! So much better than the only other ones that were available that went in the centre console armrest, and these ones you can actually use!

No a bad shout that actually! I'd still need to move the heater controls down again which means sorting out the cables so they aren't too stretched, plus it would mean my latest mod (see next post that future Dave is in the middle of typing lol) would need to be removed. So think I'm pretty much decided on the motorized screen single din unit now. That idea you had might be good for whoever buys the double din console though mate, gives them lots of options.

Yes, had a look at some of those. There are a couple where the single din radio is at the bottom, so that would possibly fit. Just not sure I'dwant a big screen on show when she's left anywhere unattended though. Also not sure how it would look being permanent in from of the hazard/heated rear window buttons? It might be an option though as tghe android ones I've seen so far are all badge engineered ones from China....some get good reviews, some get apalling reviews but all look identical lol. Any big name ones with a motorized screen are mega bucks and don't have the android OS which is annoying.

yeah was thinking that too. Sad I won't get to fit it but just got to the point where it was gonna be too much hassle for me and can't face cutting up DD to fit it lol. Not sure how those heater cables stay in place when the controls are moved down the dash as like you say, not a lot of movement available in them at all.

Nice! Amp and sub will make such a difference to the sound. Those deck roof speakers are shockingly bad....bad placement and really poor quality. Poor old DD is lying out there, her interior in bits at the moment till I decide what the hell I'm doing lol Been looking at the single din android units with motorized screens but a lot are piss poor ( and over priced) so the hunt continues!

So, was kinda warm here yesterday and we were out in DD.....and that's when we noticed!! Was hot so went to turn the heater down.........and button would only go quarter way round towards cold! Didn't even make a difference, heater was on hot! Went to change the vents to the face level ones so we could shut out the heat...that didn't work either! Realized the control cables must have become detached when I had the dash out to trial the dd conversion....grrrrrr! Really pee'd off! Stripped all the radio and centre console out again, and had a look at heater control unit. Cables were a bit trapped so free'd them off. Then spotted both had become detached at the heater box (yes, I could have got those back on without taking the console out!!! ) So trying to get the cables back onto where they needed to go was an absolute faff, didn't help it was bloody raining either. After some contorsion manuvers, they were back on. tested, all working. Had another look at dash while everything was out and have made a final decision. Thought about putting the unit lower down, maybe doing away with the ashtray etc, but would be too low imo to use it safely and would be awkward to see. So had another look at the original place I was intending to fit it and seeing what I'd really need to cut away, I'm not going ahead with the conversion. Plan B is going ahead so will be fitting a single din with unit with a motorized double din screen. Still got the car to put back together so will do that tomorrow or Thursday. If anyone is interested in either the double din head unit or the completed double din converted centre console let me know. Not sure how much to sell it for?

Yayyyyy! That's DD back with a full years MOT and had a full big service, so had oil, filters, plugs etc changed, brakes have all been stripped, cleaned, regreased and built back up, new rear discs and pads fitted. Drove her home last night and that horrible clunking noise fro n/s/r is now gone too. Was the missing shims/rear discs right enough causing that. They also fitted a new brake clip/retainer kit from Honda as the old ones were looking well dodgy!. Drove over a rough bit of road on way home that she was really rattly/clunky over before, not a sound this time! She really is driving sweet as a nut now, so smooth and quiet. Dave is a happy chappy! Will be looking at the Double din radio fitment again, see what I can do!

@KiNK43Just been having a butchers at your gauges, looks mint that!! Think the metal bit is directly below where the bottom of the radio sits, so you might have got away with it fitting the gauges? It looks like the head unit will fit in at the bottom without any troubles, so thinking this is where it will go. I've ordered up a new single din cubby hole to go where the current head unit is. Will fit the USB ports from the new head unit into the rear of that along with a new 12V socket I've ordered to replace the fag lighter socket. Will run it like this for a bit to see how it goes, not 100% sure if I'll be happy with it down there though, but will see. If I don't easy enough to revert back to oem then fit a single din with double din motorized screen and either sell this one or fit it to Mindy. Still not decided what to do with the double din console I made, whether to sell it or keep it for a rainy day?

Wowser! Now that's what I call a work car! That looks mint mate, really nice spec on these too if I remember rightly. Is it a 3L petrol or diesel? That mpg tho!!! lol

Did you do it to your MB mate? Know the eg poses similar issues when doing this mod. Did you get any photos of the internals before and after the cutting? just been out measuring again to see if I can fit it up top (moving switches down to bottom and doing away with the crappy clock) but think it might be tight. Also looking at fitting it below the heater controls and doing away with the ashtray etc as we don't use that anyways. Would need to have it tilted at a slight angle I think though with it being low down, but might be a possibility.

Nah mate, would still need the metal removing. It's the horizontal bit that sits just below the original radio hole. So it's slap bang in the way for the new head unit. Gonna have another look at it later I think before deciding to can the idea. She's off the road till the 31st anyways, as that's when she goes back in for her retest mot and to get her service, so plenty time.

Yeah, everything is a pain to do, though most of the the time the reward outweighs the pain. Was telling Gayle about it when she came home from work. She's seen the work I've put into the console and the weeks I've spent on it so knew I was excited to finally be fitting it. She's said can I not find a way around it after explaining roughly what the problem is, as she thinks it's still worth doing if I can keep the trimming of the dash innards to a minimum. Think she feels it would be a shame to stop now and sell the console after the hard work put in (and the stress is caused with various spanners being thrown into the mix and overcoming them) then see it fitted to another Civic. Will need to think really hard about it as DD is all back together now, so would mean having to yet again strip her down lol.

yeah mate, gutted! Didn't realize that there was so much more involved to it, considering the amount of work that has to go into just creating the D/D console. I might have another think about it later, but really don't relish the though of cutting away the dash innards. Plan B would mean she still looks OEM but would also have the benefit of the motorized screen (and nothing except changing the stereo to return her back to OEM). It would be the easy route with least damage. The headunit can be fitted to the MX5 if need be, although would rather not as might be too tempting for any would be thieves. Will see if there is any interest in the Centre console and head unit from Civic5 members. Would mean anyone wanting to do the conversion would only have the dash innards to do, so 3 quarters of the conversion already done for them.

Hmmm, strange one. I'm guessing the hubs you got (the powder coated ones) are from another D series civic MB/MC? Might be that the 4 x 100 hubs that got fitted are from an integra SRi or an EK4 maybe?
-
Soooooooooooo.... plan B! Plan B was originally plan A till I got carried away, so willbe purchasing a nice single din head unit with a motorized screen to fit to DD. That way I get the screen and features of the double din without destroying the dash in behind the consol. Will be straight fit, plug n play.

Double din - Mission aborted!! Got the console finished, bought the Xtrons double din android head unit....and there's where the problems began! The Xtrons gets great reviews, despite there being cheap copies of it floating around on Amazon and eBay that are totally crap. Problem 1 (Resolved): The wiring harness for Xtrons. I did a trial of the head unit in DD, to make sure everything worked. I noticed that whenever the car was turned off completely, it lost the memory/time etc. Knew right away that that meant the permanent live/accessory live were round the wrong way. So had to switch those two wires on the Xtrons harness. All soldered then heat shrinked. Problem 2 (Resolved): It ain't a bloody double din head unit, even though it's advertised as being double din!!! It's too wide/tall to fit in a double din cage. So I had to fabricate my own brackets (the ones it comes with would only work in newer cars, not the custom install we have here) and fix it to the console prior to fitting. Did that! Problem 3 (Abort abort!): got DD's original console out (what faff!, forgot how blooming tedious a job that was!) had a look at the heater controls and where I'd be moving them down to. Would need to drill new holes for the screws to mount, no biggie. Offered up the new console (head unit fitted) and bang, there's the problem! In order to get this in with the (not so) Double din unit, I would need to cut away the metalwork behind the dash/console. would also need to try and reshape the metal supports at the side of the dash as these were slightly fowling the heater controls. I never knew there was so much that would need cutting out to fit this. So I sat and looked at it for a while, then came to the conclusion.....I'm not prepared to butcher DD's dash/metalwork just to fit a stereo. The whole idea of this was that it would always be reversible so she could be returned back to stock oem if need be. Hats off to those who have done this though, a lot of work and you have bigger balls than me! lol I just do not want to butcher the car for this. So, end result is I have a head unit all ready wired and ready to go, and a double din dash for a Civic M. If anyone wants to benefit from all the hard work, drop me a pm! The console and head unit may be up for sale. Console isn't perfect, but but it does look pretty OEM. Just needs the double din surround trim to complete (would need to make one as stated above, the radio isn't exactly double din)

Woohooooo! Super excited, the new head unit is here!! Now just got to figure out how to install the damn thing! Doesnt fit in a standard double din cage, instead has brackets so looks like I'm gonna need to fit it to the console then fit the console to the car. Will probably need to fabricate some brackets. Why is nothing ever easy!
